Elon Musk, we’d all agree, is a character. Love / hate him, he somehow stays in the world’s spotlight and occasionally causes tsunamis in Crypto (remember the BTC dip in Spring ‘21? I do, very well…). Now he’s taken over Twitter, and who knows what will happen to our involuntarily chosen home for (non-) polite discourse, insanity, rugs, and even some alpha here and there. He did what he had to do. And we should do the same. What alternative, if any, Web3ers have to Twitter in the event the highly volatile Musk makes life unbearable in what's already a bear market. I say let’s make a strong attempt to not focus on Musk or attempt to gauge what he might do next BUT rather to look at the practical options we have, since this Twitter take over is about the farthest from decentralization as you can get. The point is not to rant but look at solutions to this potential problem.
What’s Your Worst Case Twitter Scenario?
Mine is a cancelled or non-free Twitter Spaces. Or non-free Twitter in general [updated 11/10 according to Fortune magazine, that might just happen]. What’s your worst-case Twitter Scenario?
Whether Musk is 'good' or 'bad', his move is symbolic of a major risk of centralization: redirection of a business entity according to the whims of its leader. Rather than 'wait around and see', the proactive thing to do in my opinion is look immediately at alternate online venues.
So let’s try to save CT by looking for/making a new home.
Reddit? Lens? Mastodon? YoFolk? BlueSky? Substack just rolled out a chat feature. I'd never been on Clubhouse, btw, but recently downloaded the app as a possible hedge to the new Crypto Twitter, whatev it turns out to be. Frankly, Clubhouse is no replacement for Twitter Spaces in that it's very inflexible imo. Do these alternatives provide a legit ‘Plan B’ for Crypto Twitter?
Things to think about, and soon.
